So why Pharmacy?
Pharmacy is a dynamic and growing profession. Over the last few decades, pharmacy has changed dramatically, from the art and science of compounding and dispensing medicine to a profession of health promoters, disease prevention specialists, health maintenance/chronic disease managers and medication-health information experts.
Pharmacy has been inseparable from mankind's history since it fulfils one of our most basic needs. As Man made his way through remote times or places, he reached out, often blindly, towards the resources of Nature for cures and remedies of diseases and in the process gradually developed pharmaceutical theories, techniques and implements with the goal of producing more effective medications. The person supplying this essential service is known as a pharmacist in modern times though he has been designated in a variety of ways throughout the ages. He still commands an important role in society – that of continuing the tradition of healthcare provision.
There is only one pharmacy school in Singapore. The NUS Department of Pharmacy has been an integral part of Singapore's health care community for 105 years. With the growth in the fields of healthcare, pharmaceuticals, life sciences and research in Singapore in recent years, it is no surprise that there is an increasing demand for pharmacists. However, there are just 0.3 practising pharmacists per 1,000 populations here — the lowest among developed countries. Thus, one of our objectives of Rag 2010 is to create greater awareness and interest in the pharmacy profession.
